(Important Bird Area IBA) – Mysterious Mangroves & Scenic paddyfields . Located 60km from Kuala Lumpur city centre is Malaysia’s most accessible birdwatching site for coastal, mangrove and open field birds – the fishing town of Kuala Selangor. This area offers 4 amazing spots with different ecosystems to target a variety of birds in their natural habitat.
Kuala Selangor Nature Park is primarily a coastal forest/mangrove zone. The park has a historical record of over 157 species including mangrove specialists such as the Mangrove Pitta, Mangrove Whistler, Mangrove Flycatcher, Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker, Lesser Adjutant and other specialties. 3 minutes away is Bukit Malawati, a historical hill adjacent to the park that offers scenic views of the area and good opportunities to view barbets, woodpeckers, sunbirds and raptors.
This site is also famous for its 2 species of primates. 10 minutes north of this site is the scenic paddy fields of Tanjong Karang which offers open field birds and water birds such as Eastern March Harriers, Woodcock, Cinnamon Bitterns, Asian Openbill etc. Another 10 minutes away is the coastline and mudflats of Bagan Pasir. Amazing during migration season (Oct to March), this site offers waders such as the Terek sandpiper, greenshanks, redshanks, sand plovers, curlews and whimbrels. Kuala Selangor is also world famous for its colony of synchronous fireflies and amazingly fresh seafood. An interesting (optional) addition to the trip!.

Recommended Attire: Long sleeve shirts, Long pants, walking shoes, hat and good sun protection, keep to earth colors like green brown or black and avoid bright colors like red, yellow, and white. Please bring your own binoculars, field scope and field guide.

1130 :Bukit Malawati birding by roadside.
1300 :Break for Lunch
1400 :Coastline and mudflats. Subject to tides, head off to the river mouth and mudflats of Bagan Pasir for waders.
1500 :Head off 10 minutes to the paddyfields of Tanjong Karang for water birds and scenic enjoyment.
1800 : Head back to Kuala Lumpur
1900 : Arrive Kuala Lumpur City Centre / end of tour.
