The Gateway to Bornean Cats The INIKEA forest (Luasong) is a unique rehabilitation landscape that has become world-renowned for its high density of nocturnal wildlife. Unlike dense primary jungles, the open canopy and strategic road networks here provide unparalleled visibility for spotting Borneo’s most secretive predators. This tour offers a raw, focused experience for those whose primary goal is to document the island’s rare felids in their natural habitat.
Specialized Wildlife Tracking Our safaris utilize modified open-top vehicles to ensure a 360-degree field of view, essential for spotting eye-shine in the thickets. While the focus is often on the “Big Three”—the Clouded Leopard, Marbled Cat, and Flat-headed Cat—the forest is also home to a diverse array of other mammals. During our drives, it is common to encounter Sunda Flying Lemurs, various Civet species, and the majestic Bornean Pygmy Elephants that frequently roam the area.
A 24-Hour Wildlife Immersion Though the highlight of this expedition is the night drives, the INIKEA forest remains active during the daylight hours. Morning drives and guided ranger walks offer opportunities to see Bornean Gibbons, Hornbills, and specialized raptors. Whether you are a professional photographer or a dedicated naturalist, the combination of expert local tracking and the forest’s incredible biodiversity makes this one of the most productive wildlife safaris in Southeast Asia.
Day 1 Pick up from Tawau after lunch and proceed with a scenic drive to the INIKEA forest area. Arrive at Camp Maris by mid-afternoon for check-in and orientation. After dinner, gear up for the first highlight of the trip: a long-duration night drive in an open-top 4×4 to track forest cats and other nocturnal mammals. Overnight at Camp Maris.
Day 2 Early morning drive to catch the forest’s transition from night to day, focusing on primates and birdlife. Return to the camp for breakfast. The afternoon is free and easy, with an optional afternoon drive (add-on) or a guided forest walk with a ranger (included). After dinner, embark on a second night safari to explore different sectors of the forest for elusive wildlife. Overnight at Camp Maris.
Day 3 Enjoy a final optional morning walk or birding session near the camp. After breakfast, pack up and prepare for the return journey. The trip ends with a transfer back to Tawau town or the airport.
