The Segaliud Lokan Experience Beluran Safari takes you deep into the Segaliud Lokan Forest Reserve, a landscape renowned for its commitment to sustainable forest management and rich biodiversity. Accessing this site through a private plantation, guests stay at the Sungai Lokan Base Camp, utilizing rustic yet comfortable staff quarters. This tour is designed for those seeking an authentic, unrefined wilderness experience far from the mainstream tourist trails of Sabah.
A Mammal Watcher’s Frontier The reserve is a critical habitat for Borneo’s “Big Five” and is emerging as a top-tier location for spotting rare nocturnal felids. Our expeditions focus on the Sunda Clouded Leopard, Marbled Cat, and the Bornean Pygmy Elephant. With the forest roads providing excellent visibility, our 4WD safaris are optimized for high-intensity wildlife tracking, offering photographers and researchers the best possible chance to document these secretive species in a “natural zoo” environment.
River and Road Expeditions The biodiversity of Beluran is best explored through a combination of land and water-based safaris. While the night belongs to the predators on the forest roads, the late afternoons are spent on the Sungai Lokan, cruising for Proboscis Monkeys, Hornbills, and various waterbirds. This dual approach ensures a comprehensive immersion into the Central Sabah wilderness, guided by expert ecologists who understand the intricate patterns of the local fauna and the towering Ficus trees that define the canopy.
Day 1 Pick up from Sandakan or Mile 32 and transfer to the safari site via 4WD vehicle (approx. 1 hour 45 minutes). Arrive at Sungai Lokan Base Camp in the late afternoon for check-in and briefing. At 4:30 PM, enjoy a river cruise along Sungai Lokan until sunset. After a basic local-style dinner at the plantation, embark on a night drive from 8:00 PM for 2 to 4 hours to track wild cats and nocturnal mammals.
Day 2 Rise and shine for an early morning boat ride at 6:30 AM to catch the riverine wildlife activity. After breakfast, enjoy time to rest and soak in the forest environment. Following lunch, head out for an afternoon 4WD wildlife safari. After dinner at 7:00 PM, the adventure continues with another intensive 2 to 3-hour night-time 4WD safari to search for the Clouded Leopard and other rare species.
Day 3 Begin the final day with a guided morning drive to maximize sightings before the trip concludes. After breakfast, pack your gear and prepare for the return transfer back to Sandakan or your preferred drop-off location.
