Langkawi to Fraser Hills Birding

This tour is for the birders that have a shorter time for their holiday so we have tried to include a diverse range of habitats and easy relaxing birding phase.

Destinations: Langkawi – Fraser Hills
Duration : 5 days and 4 nights
Target Birds : 150 to 200 species
Price : RM3300 per person on twin sharing room – Minimum 2 persons
Included in price: Accommodation in twin sharing room, bird guide, all land transportation.
Not Included in Price: Domestic airfare, Lunch, Dinner, Beverages, Camera fees where applicable, Tips and porter.

 

ITINERARY:

Day 1 : Langkawi
Pick up from the airport and transfer to your hotel. Rest.

Day 2 : Langkawi
Session 1: Pick up time: 7.30am : Rainforest Birds and Mangrove Forest Birds
The open corridor between tracks of rainforest is best for observing these birds. Among the birds we may see are Flower Peckers, Hill Mynas, Dollarbirds, Green Pigeons, Drongos, Tailorbirds, Babblers, Bulbuls, Sunbirds, Eagles, Woodpeckers and Oriental-pied Hornbills.
Our next destination takes us to a mangrove forest to search out Brown-winged Kingfishers, Collared Kingfishers, Black-capped Kingfishers, White-bellied Sea Eagles, Brahminy Kites, Common Sandpipers and Little Herons. Return to hotel at 11.30am

Afternoon : Mountain Birds and wetland birds : A short drive to a local village pond that is frequented by Lesser Whistling-Ducks, Little Egrets, Little Herons, Moorhens, Little Grebes, Pond Herons, Needle-tailed Swifts and Striated Swallows. We drive to the highest peak in Langkawi to see the Great Hornbills and Wreathed Hornbills. These amazing birds will be the highlight of the trip. The Great Hornbills, measures at 1.3meters (4 feet) from tip of beak to tip of tail, are the largest birds in Langkawi. Return to hotel at 7.30pm

Day 3 : Langkawi to Fraser Hill
Morning birding Scrubland, Disturbed Forest, Mudflats,Paddy Field Birds and Plantations Birds.
Depending on the tide, we might start at the mudflat area where we get to see Pacific Golden Plovers, Sand Martins, Sand Pipers and Arctic Warblers. We then continue on to scrubland rainforest in search of Black-hooded Orioles and continue on to plantations in the hope of seeing Chestnut-breasted Malkohas and Blue-wing Pittas. We make our way to the paddy fields in search of birda associated with this habitat. We may get to see Sandpipers, Plovers, Lapwings, Pond Herons, Egrets, Bitterns, White-throated Kingfishers, Peaceful Doves, Spotted Doves and Plain-backed Sparrows. Also any other target birds that we have not seen yet. Drop at airport for flight to KLIA. Pick up at KLIA and drive up to Fraser Hills..

Day 4 :  Fraser Hill
Fraser Hills Fraser’s Hill (also part of an IBA) for highland & lower montane birds. Here we will spend the next 3 days in birding heaven. At Fraser’s Hill we will get to see about 50 -70 highland species and we will hope to catch good views of mostly sunda endemics i.e. Blyths Hawk-Eagle, Malaysian Hill Partridge (E), Yellow-vented Pigeon, Mountain Imperial Pigeon, Blue-crowned Hanging-Parrot, Green-billed Malkoha, Brown Wood-Owl, Treewsifts (Whiskered, Grey-rumped), Laughing-thrush (Black, Chesnut-capped & Chestnut crowned), Trogons (Red-headed & Orange-breasted), Red-bearded Bee-eater, Hornbills (Rhinoceros, Great, Wreathed), Barbets (Black-browed, Gold-whiskered, Brown), Yellownape (Greater & Lesser), Broadbills (Silver-breasted & Long-tailed), Red-rumped Swallow, Large Woodshrike, Malaysian Cuckoo-shrike, Grey-chinned Minivet, Orange-bellied Leafbird, Bulbuls (Black-headed, Black Crested, Ochraceous & Mountain), Drongos (Bronzed, Lesser & Greater), Asian Fairy Bluebird, Black and Crimson Oriole, Green Magpie, Sultan Tit, Blue Nuthatch, Babblers (Buff-breasted, Striped-Tit, Golden, Grey-throated, White-hooded & Large Scimitar), Silvered-eared Mesia, Mountain Fulvetta, Long-tailed Sibia, Slaty-backed Forktail, Malayan Whistling Thrush (E) and Blue Whistling Thrush, Mountain Tailorbird, Flycatchers (Verditer & Little Pied), Large Niltava, White-throated Fantail, Black-throated Sunbird, Streaked Spiderhunter, Buff-bellied Flowerpecker, Everett’s White-eye etc..

Day 5: Depart Fraser Hills – drop off to KLIA
Morning birding in Fraser Hills. Check out and drop at KLIA.
